The movement seems to be growing but it just seems like a massive waste of energy to me. I want changes to get a fairer shake for the little guy as much as anyone else but the people involved with it could be spending their time doing something that could conceivably lead to some sort of result. I’m not against protests in general but if you’re going to protest something, you should probably protest a specific entity and have demands that they could give into if they wanted to placate you. I’m not sure what any of these people expect to happen. Is “Wall Street” going to give in and tell them it’s decided to stop being greedy at some point? Wall Street isn’t a single well defined entity. Additionally greed is a natural part of the human condition. They might as well protest the tides. Maybe when they’re done they can fight for Stan’s right to have babies.
If you’re angry about big banks, your best coarse of action is probably close your account with the one you happen to use. Try to find a local community bank, they usually seem to have better deals for checking and savings accounts than the big guys anyway. They need to compensate for being somewhat under the radar by trying to actually attract customers with their products and not piss them off with tons of fees.
If you’re angry about the lack of financial regulations, rather than camping out somewhere to symbolize that, you could research political candidates that share your position and volunteer your time towards getting them elected.
If you’re angry about money in politics and don’t think supporting a candidate will make a difference one way or the other because the system is broken, you should get involved with Lawrence Lessig’s Fix Congress initiative to get publicly funded elections.
There are a lot of major problems this country is facing and we need real action to fix them, not a hissy fit.
